Cai Rang floating market: the living soul of the Mekong delta
A true emblem of the Mekong Delta, Cai Rang floating market is one of the largest and most authentic markets on the water in Vietnam. Located a few kilometres from the centre of Can Tho, it perpetuates a centuries-old commercial tradition, when waterways were the main means of transport and trade in this region traversed by an immense network of canals.
At dawn, the market comes alive in a unique atmosphere. Dozens of boats loaded with tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers or agricultural products gather to sell their harvest directly on the water. Each boat has a long bamboo mast, called "cay beo", to which the products offered for sale are suspended. This ingenious system allows buyers to identify goods remotely, without even having to approach.
Beyond its commercial activity, Cái Răng offers a fascinating immersion into the daily life of the delta’s inhabitants. Small boats circulate between the largest boats to serve a Vietnamese coffee, a bowl of Hu Tieu soup or a delicious Banh Mi, while conversations and exchanges give life to this true floating village.
If the market has evolved with the development of land routes, it remains today a strong symbol of the identity of the Mekong. Visiting at sunrise allows you to discover an authentic Vietnam, where traditions, friendliness and know-how continue to punctuate the lives of local residents. An essential experience for all those who wish to understand the soul of the Mekong Delta.
