Le Nord du Vietnam, terre des ethnies et des montagnes

North Vietnam is undoubtedly the wildest and most fascinating region of the country.
Between limestone peaks, deep valleys and terraced rice fields, this land of contrasts is home to a mosaic of millenary peoples and traditions.
Here, the mountains are alive: they resound with the noise of markets, the pounding of weaving looms and the laughter of children running in the red earth paths.

The Haut Tonkin, which extends from Ba Be to Ha Giang via Meo Vac and Dong Van, is a true cultural sanctuary.
It is there that the mountainous ethnic groups of Vietnam live: Tay, Dzao, Hmong, Nung and Lolos Noirs, each with their costumes, customs and language.
Their life is intimately linked to the mountains, to the cultivation of rice, corn and a deep respect for nature.

A world suspended between sky and rice fields

In the valleys enveloped in mist, the rice terraces draw landscapes of striking beauty, hand-carved for generations.
Each season offers a different face: the tender green of the young shoots in spring, the gold bursting of the harvests in autumn.
The villages on stilts blend into this natural setting, and the inhabitants welcome you with a sincere smile, always ready to share a tea or a story.

A human experience above all

Traveling in the North of Vietnam means meeting a people deeply attached to their roots.
It is to attend a colorful ethnic market, observe the weaving of a handembroidered scarf or listen to the songs of a village festival.

Imperial tombs of Hue

Throughout the course, the landscapes open up to peaceful hills, shimmering lakes and carefully designed gardens – so many sublime decorations chosen by the Nguyen sovereigns to rest in absolute serenity.

Each mausoleum reveals a soul, a style, a vision: the melancholic poetry of Tu Duc, the symbolic power of Minh Mang, the artistic audacity of Khai Dinh… These monumental tombs, built like real palaces, testify to a unique imperial refinement in Vietnam. The sculpted mandalas, protective dragons, colossal steles and pavilions with varnished tiles tell a world made of rituals, spirituality and grandeur.

The best period for this day of visit

The best period to fully enjoy this day of visit generally extends from April to mid-October, when conditions are most pleasant and the landscapes reveal all their beauty. During these months, the light is softer, the temperatures are milder and nature particularly bright, offering an ideal atmosphere for exploration.

In spring, the vegetation is reborn, the colors are fresh and the bright days create a perfectly serene setting.
In summer, despite some tropical showers, the mornings are splendid, the rivers clearer and the sites bathed in a warm and radiant light.
In the autumn, the climate becomes milder, the landscapes take on a golden hue and the conditions are optimal for walking, visiting and contemplating.

Choosing this period means guaranteeing a day of authentic discovery, comfortable and rich in emotions – an absolutely fabulous experience, sublimated by the best natural conditions.

Tomb of Khai Dinh

Perched on the green hills south of Hue, the tomb of Khai Dinh stands as a singular masterpiece, bold, almost theatrical. From the moment you see its dark silhouette cut into the landscape, you understand that this building has nothing in common with the traditional mausoleums of the Nguyen kings. Here, everything is contrast, power and sophistication – a modern imperial vision, at the crossroads of East and West.

To reach the shrine, you have to climb a succession of stairs framed by stone dragons, symbols of power and protection. The ascent, solemn and slightly mystical, offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, revealing a majestic setting where the sky and the forest come together in perfect harmony.

Then comes the entry into the universe of Khai Dinh: a courtyard paved with black stone, sculptures with meticulous details, stone guards aligned as if frozen in time. The architecture surprises with its mix of styles – French influences, traditional Vietnamese patterns, Gothic touches and Hindu decorations – a unique fusion that reflects the complex, refined, almost extravagant personality of the emperor.

But it is inside the Thien Dinh palace that the experience becomes truly dazzling. The walls and ceilings are covered with hand-crafted glass and porcelain mosaics, sparkling like jewels under the light. Dragons, flowers, phoenix and imperial motifs intertwine in an explosion of colors and reliefs. In the center, the throne and the statue of Khai Dinh are enthroned in a setting of incredible richness, sublimating the royal power in a setting of striking beauty.

The tomb of Khai Dinh is more than a monument: it is an artistic statement, a personal work where the emperor wanted to inscribe his heritage in stone and light. A fabulous, unmissable visit that reveals one of the most fascinating facets of the imperial history of Hue.

The lagoon of Hue

At the heart of Vietnam’s central coastline, the Hue Lagoon stretches out like a tranquil mirror between the misty mountains and the East Sea. As soon as one approaches it, a soft and almost unreal atmosphere envelops the traveler: the water reflects the sky like a changing canvas, the clouds melt into the green mountains, and the wind carries the salty perfumes of the open sea. It is a landscape of dazzling serenity, where time seems to slow down.

Traditional fishing boats slowly glide over the still surface, their slim silhouettes drawing delicate black lines on the horizon. The suspended nets, the wooden stakes planted in the water, the floating huts make up a painting that is both simple and poetic, witness to the life of fishermen who live to the rhythm of the tides and the seasons. In the early hours of the day, the lagoon is adorned with a silver light; at dusk, it becomes a golden, almost mystical decor.

Here, everything invites to contemplation: the mountains of Annam are reflected in the calm waters, the clouds move slowly, and the distant songs of fishermen punctuate the evening air. The lagoon of Hue is a natural refuge, a fragile and precious space where the authentic beauty of Vietnam is expressed.

Sitting on the edge of this lagoon, embarking for a short navigation or simply observing the scene, is to live a fabulous moment, suspended between land, sea and sky. A deep immersion in the peaceful and luminous soul of Hué.
